Types of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a disease that invades the gums and the bone around the teeth. When plaque builds up it becomes calculus. When calculus is not removed, it will destroy the gums and bone surrounding the teeth. The main signs periodontal disease presents with are red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Initially this is not painful in the early stages, but without seeking treatment, the tooth loss can occur.

Here are some of the most common types of periodontal disease:
• Gingivitis
• Chronic periodontitis
• Aggressive periodontitis
• Necrotizing periodontitis
• Periodontitis caused by systemic disease
