At Excel Dental, fluoride is recommended to our patients at every dental appointment. The reason we recommend fluoride is because it is the most effective way to prevent tooth decay. Topical fluoride gel, which is applied directly to your teeth in our office works by soaking into the tooth enamel, strengthening teeth, and making them more resistant to decay. You can also find topical fluoride in over the counter dental products such as fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinses.
Fluoride can also be ingested systemically through most foods and water supplies, or supplemented in drop, tablet, or gel form. Prescriptions are also available. Systemic fluoride strengthens teeth above and below the gums. Be careful in giving your children too much fluoride while their teeth are developing. White spots may develop on their teeth when fluoride is consumed in large amounts.
Drs. Davis and Matthews recommend that children have a professional application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups. In addition to fluoride for preventing cavities, our dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing regularly, eating balanced meals, reducing sugary snacks, and visiting Excel Dental on a regular basis.
Ask Drs. Davis and Matthews if they would recommend topical/systemic fluoride for yourself or for your child. If you have further questions about fluoride intake, our team at Excel Dental would be happy to talk with you about how it could benefit you or your family’s oral dentition and keep you smiling healthy.
